These awesome storms have been a deadly problem for residents and sailors ever since the early days of colonization. Since 1900, there have been 48 hurricanes that have hit landfall in the United States and registered 3 or higher on the Saffir-Simpson scale. These storms have caused damage in excess of $68 billion (adjusted for inflation). Damage from Hurricane Andrew (1992) alone was estimated at more than $25 billion in South Florida and Louisiana.

While hurricanes cannot be controlled, our vulnerability can be reduced through awareness and preparedness.
